Individuals with specific medical conditions that necessitate protection from sunlight can seek a medical exemption. To do so, they must obtain a certified statement from a licensed physician detailing the medical necessity for tinted windows.
This original certification, along with an application, must be submitted to the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office. If approved, the vehicle will be issued a Window Tint License Plate, which must be displayed on the vehicle. The approved medical certification is valid for four years and must be renewed. A copy of the renewed certification must be submitted each year along with the application for the renewal of the Window Tint License Plate. It’s the Window Tint License Plate, not just the physician’s statement, that signifies the legal medical exemption.
Automotive window tinting does more than make your drive better—it can save you money and keep your car looking good. By cutting heat, tinted windows ease up on your AC, which can mean using less gas. Blocking UV rays also keeps your interior from getting beat up, so you don’t end up paying to fix faded seats or cracked dashboards.
If you run a business, tinting your fleet vehicles gives them a sharp, professional look while keeping drivers and cargo safe. Plus, a tinted car can sell for more since buyers love the added comfort and style.
